Barbados to represent West Indies in Commonwealth Games at Birmingham

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Barbados women’s team would be participating in next year’s commonwealth games as the West Indies representative team.

This decision was taken after the CWI Board of Directors announced the postponement of the T20 Blaze and Women’s Super50 cup that were West Indies qualifying tournaments for the CWG till next year.

CWI, in a statement, said, “Following the postponement, the Barbados Women’s team will be the representative team from the West Indies as a result of their victory in the 2020 CWI T20 Blaze tournament and in line with Commonwealth Games Association Tournament rules agreed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).”

Cricket will be getting a return to the CWG for the first time as from 1998 with a women’s cricket that is ready to be presented in the 2022 Birmingham edition.

The decision to delay the regional women’s tournaments was considered after ODI and T20I dates for the West Indies vs South Africa series, from August 31 to September 19, was concluded.

CWI CEO Johnny Grave said that the ongoing logistical challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic expecting multiple teams to be hosted in one country were also taken into account. They had been forced to take the decision to postpone the Women’s T20 Blaze and Women’s CG Insurance Super50 Cup for this year.

CWI CEO Grave said that they want to congratulate the Barbados Women’s team for being chosen to represent the West Indies in the Commonwealth Games in the year 2022. They wish all team members all the very best as they compete for the gold medal, and they knew that they would continue to make West Indies proud. The board had invested in several high-performance camps and international fixtures for women.
