Barbados to receive 100,000 doses of vaccines soon: PM Mottley

Barbados: Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announces that Barbados to receive 100,000 doses of vaccines from India soon.

Barbados’ frontline workers will begin receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

The first batch of vaccines is anticipated to target 50,000 frontline workers, including doctors, nurses, those who serve with medical facilities or other essential services to the country, police, hotel, and supermarket workers.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley made this statement on the previous day during an address to the Ilaro Court nation. She said Barbados had obtained a commitment from India for 100,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

“We have given the word, and Cabinet has approved that the first grantees must be the frontline workers. Frontline workers go from the medical. I mean anybody operating in critical medical establishments. We also mean the police and the national security forces of the country and critical/essential services that keep the country going,” she said.

On the other hand, 28 new coronavirus positive results were recognized on Monday, February 1, from among the 866 tests administered by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory.

A total of 37 persons were recorded to have recovered yesterday from the viral illness and were discharged from isolation. There are now 366 active cases in the nation.

The 28 new cases involve 11 women and 17 men. Seven of them are persons who would have been before sent to the Harrison Point Isolation Facility for evaluation. A person would be sent to Harrison Point for evaluation to confirm whether their PCR test result is a novel case or an old case.

The other 21 cases involve 18 Barbadians and two non-residents. The total number of persons identified as positive at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds remains at 362. Of these, 355 have redeemed, and the remaining seven patients are involved in the active cases.

Till now, Barbados has reported 1,586 confirmed cases – 653 females, 933 males – and 1,206 persons have redeemed. Fourteen persons have died from coronavirus. The Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory has performed 104,334 tests since February 2020.
