Barbados: The island of Barbados will officially remove England’s Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state by December.
Barbados is one of the 16 countries that still accept the Queen of England as head of state. But in nearly two months, after more than 20 years of planning, it will become the – world’s newest Republic, removing the queen as its nominal ruler. This will reduce the number of countries that the queen “rules” to 15.
Jamaica, another British Commonwealth, is also looking forward to removing Queen Elizabeth as their head of state. Queen’s last visit to Barbados was in the year of 1966. This visit was paid after the island had obtained its independence from Great Britain.
The queen’s current representative to – Barbados, Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason, will be installed December 1, 2021, as the ceremonial president of Barbados – which became an independent nation in the year 1966 after four centuries as a British colony.
While talking to the local media house, the Prime Minister of Barbados cited that, “The time has come for us to make decisions fully on our own. It is not a divisive decision. We believe that the time has just come for us to boost the confidence of our people.”
“This will be another step in the island’s journey from a deep colonial past to an independent future,” she added. Doing this, the island country will have a president as head of the executive branch and separate legislative and judicial branches. It could also choose to hold the so-called ‘Westminster system ‘, under which it has operated for more than half a century.
Barbados is an – eastern Caribbean island and an independent British Commonwealth nation. Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, is a cruise-ship port with colonial buildings and Nidhe Israel, a synagogue that was founded in the year – 1654.
