Antigua and Barbuda: The broadcasting services of Antigua and Barbuda confirmed the intention to begin the operation of LIAT 2020 around the same time as the  LIAT 1974 is ceasing its operations before the end of this month.

The confirmation of the beginning of the operations of LIAT 2020 has come forward from the Prime Minister of the country, Gaston Browne. The announcement for the same was made on January 6, 2024 (Saturday), during the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM.

Interestingly, the Prime Minister mentioned that the region is proceeding with the purchase of aircraft for LIAT 2020 at commercial prices, which will give access to the people of the country for transportation. In connection with this, no objection letters are asked from LIAT 1974 Limited for proceeding with the purchase of these planes.

Moreover, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has also mentioned that Air Peace is going to be the major shareholder in LIAT 2020, and is ready to give his staff to LIAT 2020. Even the administration of Gaston Browne has saved the LIAT from liquidation as during the peak of Covid 19, it was going from a major downfall due to no arrival and departure of passengers through this.

Operational Cease of LIAT 1974

The Antigua based LIAT is to cease its operations on January 24, 2024 and the employees connected to it will be made redundant from February 4, 2024 resulting in a major employment loss. However, the Prime Minister, during the national budget presentation last month, confirmed to restructure it.

He added that LIAT 1974 Ltd. on November 1, 2020 resumed flying operations. In 2023, despite hurdles, the LIAT 1974 operated a limited schedule across various countries with a count of 167 dedicated staff.

Significantly, the Prime Minister even highlighted that the Barbados based CDB (Caribbean Development Bank) will provide support in strengthening the arrangements among the government for the operation of LIAT 2020.
