John Campbell’s no-show leads to Level 3 charges 

John Campbell, the Captain of Jamaica Scorpions has been suspended for four matches, for failing to appear for the toss during CG United Super50 Final against Barbados Pride.

This no-show behaviour by Campbell was highly disregarded by Cricket West Indies who decided to not give any prize money or match fees to either team involved in the CG United Super50 Final. 

What happened in the final match between Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions

The Final of the CG United Super50 Final was scheduled to take place between Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions on 23rd November, 2024.

The final match was already on shaky ground due to inclement weather conditions. The rain interrupted the game due to which the overs were reduced to 20. This decision was taken by the umpires with a vision to ensure a result of the game despite adverse conditions.

Action against John Campbell

The officials of the match worked stringently with a vision to prepare the pitch and make it playable for the players. The umpires and referees also allowed for the game to initiate. However, the disappearance by Campbell during the toss time, resulted in the match being forfeited, leaving the tournament without any result.

Therefore, the Cricket West Indies imposed a suspension of four matches on Campbell following a Level 3 Charge. This offense involves behaviour by player that reduces the spirit or authenticity of the game.

John Campbell apologizes

Following his suspension, the Captain of Jamaica Scorpions, John Campbell issued an apology for the disruption caused during the final. He added that he acknowledges that his actions may have been perceived as resistance to the match officials’ decision.

CWI Director, Miles Bascombe on the suspension of player

Shedding light on the situation, the CWI Director, Miles Bascombe said that they appreciate the sincere apology by the player. He added that this decision has reinforced the crucial role of captains in upholding the values of sportsmanship and respect for the integrity of the game.

He added that this suspension will serve as a lesson in John Campbell’s life so that he could contribute positively to West Indies cricket in future.

No Prize money to be awarded

The prize money set for the Champion of the final was US$100,000.00 and US$50,000.00 for the runner-up. However, following the actions by both the teams, the CWI confirmed to not award either Jamaica Scorpions or Barbados Pride.
