Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received Guyana’s highest civilian honour called The Order of Excellence. The award was presented by the head of state, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali during a ceremony held at the State House in Georgetown.
The honour is meant to celebrate PM Modi’s noble leadership beside the contribution he has made towards the wellbeing of the people worldwide.
The ceremony also endorsed the attempts to come to a better relationship with India by the cooperative nation of Guyana. Prime Minister Modi is only the fourth foreign leader to ever get this honour.
When receiving the honour, PM Modi dedicated it to the people of India. He underscores the historical relationship between Guyana and India. He said the ongoing trip means reaffirmation of continued Indian support to the India-Guyana relations.
The event was useful to demonstrate the further development of relations between the two states. President Ali commended on the technological and innovative development that India has undergone. He said these tools should help to fill gaps between nations and to reduce poverty.
“India is a part of the CARICOM,” Ali said. He accepted India’s position as one of world leading countries and its stand with the Caribbean countries.
PM Modi also thanked the President and the people of Guyana. “This honour belongs to the 140 crore people of India,” he said. President Ali continued emphasising the need for the two nations to do more for the India-Guyana and for the Global South as a whole.
As for the culture, PM Modi further pointed out the relations between the two countries were culturally related. Divine historical reflections by Modi, referred to Guyana as ‘The Land of Many Waters’. He compared Guyana to India and referred to Guyanese water system as Ganga Yamuna of the West.
This occasion will draw people’s attention to the fact of close historical and cultural relations between the two countries. India has a large diaspora in Guyana and the ties between the two countries have been improving.
The Ministry of External Affairs in India has welcomed the award labelling it as ‘another addition to the cap for India’. This presents India as a country that is emerging to have a say internationally.
This wasn’t PM Modi’s own trip to Guyana but a part of India-CARICOM Summit. The summit is thus undertaken to foster further cooperation with Caribbean countries. By getting this honour India’s position in the region is strengthened better.
This token of honor is not only a recognition of the Indian Prime Minister, but also serves as a tribute to the shared vision between the two nations. This move is to fortify the existing bond shared by India and Guyana based on the aspects of culture, history, and correlative respect.
