Guyana: Govt employee charged for killing road worker

Georgetown, Guyana: A 44-year-old driver of Guyana was charged with killing a road worker on Friday, 22 December 2023.

Notably, a driver has been identified as Dwayne Williams, a resident of Lot 5 Kuru Kurururu, Linden Soesdyke Highway, East Bank Demerara. The road worker has been recognised as 29-year-old Daniel McCalmon, a resident of Lot 24 West La Penitence, Georgetown.

The driver was taken to the Sparendaam Magistrate Court. He pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. The bail was granted with a sum of $500,000. The matter has been adjourned, and the next hearing will be conducted on 29 December 2024 at 10:00 am.

It is to be noted that the accident took place on 19 December 2023 at Montrose Public Road at around 22:05. The driver was driving a motor pickup PAD 1720 owned by the National Insurance Scheme.

As per the information, motor pickup PAD 1720 was heading towards the west on the southern carriageway of Montrose Public Road, East Coast Demerara, at a fast speed.

Moreover, William lost control of his vehicle while taking a left turn, resulting in his collision with the centre median of the road. Subsequently, the vehicle ended up on the northern carriageway and collided with Daniel McCalmon. While, the victim was doing roadwork along the northern carriageway.

According to the sources, another vehicle, motor pickup #GMM 8060, was also involved in the accident. The vehicle was owned and driven by an 80-year-old man from Dasrath Street, Triumph Village, East Coast Demerara.

As after colliding with the victim, #PAD 1720 collided with Motor Pickup #GMM 8060, which was heading towards the northern driving lane of the northern carriageway of the road.

Further, the deceased was picked up in an unconscious manner by the citizens and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The victim was examined by doctors on duty and was announced as dead.

Furthermore, several people expressed their sentiments on this, adding, “That’s how these government drivers drive as if they can do anything and get off.”
