Trinidad and Tobago: UNC stated that “Generational Gap has been created by the Government’s inability to proactively manage COVID-19 setback.”

UNC addressed the nation that, After one year of Educational Institutions being closed, a recent article was published by the Ministry of Education that indicated that 47,000 young students are without access to devices and the internet. This Government has therefore created a generational crisis and is yet to find a solution for all.

Furthermore, UNC added, Initially, a statement was made by the Minister of Education indicating that schools would be provided with photocopying material. However, this relied heavily on adequate provision of information and resources of schools and the ability of parents to adapt to the role of teacher.

Additionally, the government has failed to provide even this support.

The United National Congress Youth Arm is concerned about this lost generation and adds our voice to the thousands of Nationals who are dissatisfied with the Government’s response to COVID-19 and the degradation of its duty to our youths.

Perhaps, this is so because the Minister of Youth Development and National Services is unfit for the office that he holds. The UNC Youth Arm is of the view that this minister cannot relate to the young people of our country because of his age, perhaps because of sheer incompetence. In either case, this is unacceptable.

This is the first that a minister who is responsible for the development of young people happens to be a pensioner. We went from a narcoleptic Minister of Education to two who, based on their work ethic, are sleepwalking.

Pure rhetoric but no performance, they have bulldozed the scholarship system, and they have still not attended to the students who were severely affected by the 2020 CXC examinations and who have been disenchanted by this uncaring and insensitive government.

UNC declared, “If the government cannot invest in their human capital, then this proves where their priorities are, and for that, they are not serious about governing.”

“We advise that this government show love for the country, do the patriotic thing, and resign immediately,” UNC added.
