Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) issued a Small Craft Warning when one of the following is affecting or expected to affect the marine area within the next 48 hours. Due to the severe conditions, the marine has been given a ‘Red’ alert.
General swell Information: As per BMS, the seas are forecasted to be moderate to rough in open water, with swell ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 meters, equal to 8 to 11 ft. A small craft warning is in effect for above-normal swell heights.
The following are the conditions expected during the small craft warning,
- Sea swells greater than 3 meters
- Reduced visibility of less than 5 km
- Sustained winds of 25 to 33 knots
It is to be noted that sea bathers are advised to avoid the water. Only vessels capable of withstanding these swell magnitudes should venture into these waters.
According to BMS reports, Barbados may experience a mix of sunshine and cloudy weather with a few brief scattered light showers.
The Atlantic high-pressure system will continue to dominate the region, with gusty winds and high waves in the water. Sea conditions are expected to remain disturbed throughout the week, as high swells are possible in the marine area.
Winds Forecast: The winds are forecasted to be strong east- north easterly to easterly breeze from 35 to 55 km/hour, which is equal to 22 to 34 mph and decreasing across Barbados. BMS has made the people aware and suggested they remain in their homes due to strong winds.
Additionally, winds are expected to increase during this time, therefore this advisory may upgrade to a Small Craft Warning and High Surf Advisory in a few days.
