Antigua and Barbuda: Antigua and Barbuda successfully sold the luxurious superyacht Alfa Nero for US$40 million. This vessel has been reported to be bought by a Turkish billionaire but whose name has not been revealed yet by the authorities.
The government decided to put up the vessel for the auction after seizing the yacht in April 2023. The owner of Alfa Nero was said to be on the sanction list issued by the US, the UK and the European Union, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Therefore, in 2022 the vessel was ordered to stay in the country and was unable to refuel and could only take on emergency supplies. And, since then, the yacht was in Falmouth Harbour and was costing the government $28000 a week, not including food and wages for the crew members. The extended stay of the vessel resulted in causing financial, environmental and several other challenges for Antigua and Barbuda.
Also, initially the US tech mogul Eric Schmidt placed a winning bid for 67$ but the sale was not finalised due to some legal complications. However, this confirmed sale has brought a relief to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda who is planning to utilize the funds to settle their outstanding debts.
The government of Antigua and Barbuda stated that they are committed to address all fiscal needs and ensure financial stability in the country.
