Honduras: An environmentalist worker has been killed ruthlessly in front of his family members. Reports say that killer was a masked man armed with shooters and weapons. Police confirmed this news on Monday.

Felix Vasquez, a defender of the environment and human rights, killed the victim on Saturday night after muggling in his village El Okotál in central Honduras.

Victim Vasquez was a member of the indigenous Lenca community living in the hilly region near the border with El Salvador, assigned to run for Congress in the 2021 elections as a member of the antagonist LIBRE party.

News agency confirmed this news from a law enforcement spokesman when examination into the crime was ongoing. “The police officers decided to launch a related investigation immediately, We hope to get a response soon,” stated Police officer Kevin Hernández. On the other hand, Former President Manuel Zelaya tweeted “We condemn Felix Vasquez’s assassination, the indigenous leader, the protector of rivers and forests”.

According to several newspapers and clips, Honduras is considered one of the world’s most dangerous countries for activists and environmentalists, with 14 people killed by four land and environmental defenders in 2018 last year.

Victim’s murder comes four years after the assassination of Lenka indigenous activist Berta Caesar, a veteran land rights defender who led a fight against a large dam on ancestral land before dying at his home.

Crimes like this can create terror among the population. It is no less than a threat to people. The population needs assurance about their safety from criminals like these. Citizen’s are asking for justice. Felix Vasquez’s murder is a heinous crime if crimes like these continue, people will one day abandon Honduras.
