St Kitts and Nevis to decarbonize Basseterre Deep Water Port, aims to become sustainable global leaders

The Basseterre Deep Water Port will be decarbonized under the sustainable agenda of St Kitts and Nevis with a vision to enhance renewable energy and reduce carbon footprints. This announcement was made by the Government of St Kitts and Nevis, spearheaded by SYG TECH.

This project is a significant initiative undertaken by the authorities with a vision to cut around 46% of the greenhouse gas emissions of the port. This reduction is almost equivalent to a saving of 141 tonnes of CO2 annually.

As per the details, the project will mark the implementation of a renewable energy-powered microgrid. This microgrid will feature SYG TECH’s innovative Vertical Axis Wind Turbine technology, solar energy and storage solutions.

This turbine will consist of unique storm protection feature aiming to protect the nation from extreme and unforeseen weather conditions. The authorities added that these features have been designed with a purpose to tackle the severe weather conditions like Hurricane.

According to the information shared by the authorities, the SYG TECH’s wind turbine employs advanced technology. These technologies will be used for monitoring wind speeds and enter a “storm protection” mode and closing wings in case of the detection of extreme winds. Also, the tilt-down feature will also be implemented, aiming to offer huge protection during hurricanes and storms.

The authorities added that the installation of these features shed light on their commitment towards ensuring the durability of the equipment in poor weather conditions.

Moreover, the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew shed light on this significant initiative. He stated that this significant initiative marks the commitment of the authorities towards leading the nation to their Sustainable Island State Agenda and the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

He added that the integration of innovative wind turbine technology at their Deep-Water Port will play a huge role in making St Kitts and Nevis a global leader in sustainability. The Prime Minister stated that this initiative has undertaken by the Government in order to address all the current environmental challenges and set a new benchmark for green infrastructure in the Caribbean region.

Moreover, the Minister of Tourism of St Kitts and Nevis, Marsha Henderson called this project, a monumental achievement for the island nation. She added that this initiative would play a significant role in reducing emissions, improving operational efficiency and elevating the port as sustainable maritime transport.

The Minister added that this project would serve as a beacon of hope and will inspire other nations as well who are seeking sustainable solutions.
