St Kitts and Nevis: Police Uncovers Marijuana Smuggling Attempt

Rejon Hanley is accused of importing marijuana into St Kitts and Nevis on October 18, 2023. According to Police officials, on October 16 2023, a package arrived by air at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport, which Hanley tried to clear.

The officials found black bags of marijuana weighing 2146 grams while checking that package. Till the investigation process is going, he was held back and asked to remain in custody.

The Police charged Hanley under several cases. These included making a false declaration, fraudulently misleading and avoiding customs officers and import, as well as concealment of restricted goods. These charges were laid on him at the Basseterre Police Station on October 20 2023.

This is not the first drug trafficking case that has been found in St Kitts and Nevis.

A few days ago, Police officials grabbed a quantity of illicit drugs which was suspected to be Hashish on the Southeast Peninsula.

The Police Personnel of the Frigate Bay Police Station stepped to Turtle Beach on the Southeast Peninsula on April 13. The officials also found a brown package that radiated a strong smell of cannabis during their interrogation into the matter.

The department of RSCNPF’s Crime Scene Investigation suspected the narcotics and captured the pictures that can be strong proof.

The Police seized and took into custody the illegal drug substance and found 60 transparent packages within the three packages, including a brown substance suspected to be Hashish. This package is weighted at 30 Kg.

However, no one was held responsible or taken into custody for this matter.

Moreover, the overview of Crime statistics from 2020-2023 was shared by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, showing the fluctuation of attempted and recorded crimes over the years.

There were a total of 1125 crimes that were committed in total in 12 different categories. There were 1248 and 1360 crimes in the year 2021 and 2022, respectively. In a time span of six months, there have been 663 crimes committed, according to the report shared by the RSCNPF department.

According to this report, the maximum number of crimes that are occurring in St Kitts and Nevis are Larcenies, Malicious Damage, Other Bodily Crimes and Break-ins.

Furthermore, the rate of drug-related crimes has decreased in St Kitts and Nevis, as per the data. As it shows, there were 59 drug cases in 2020, 20 in 2021, 26 in 2022, and six cases only so far in 2023.

Illegally consuming and exporting or importing drugs is not only harmful to the body but also to the nation.
