St Kitts and Nevis celebrates Kim Collins Day and his legacy

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew celebrated Kim Collins Day on Sunday, 25th August 2024 in order to commemorate his remarkable achievements and enduring legacy left by him in sports sector.

While sharing his picture on his social media account, the Prime Minister stated that on this day, 21 years ago, i.e. on 25th August 2003, Kim Collins registered his name in history by becoming the first ever Caribbean athlete to clinch gold medal in the 100m at IAAF World Championships in Paris.

The Prime Minister noted that Kim Collins triumph was more than just a victory as it created a identity of St Kitts and Nevis on the global athletics map.

While shedding light on his victory, PM Drew noted that it has been the testament to his hard work and dedication which remains a source of immense pride for St Kitts and Nevis.

He added that his outstanding achievement in Paris in 2003 serves as a shining example and inspiration for all the athletes of St Kitts and Nevis and also for the other Caribbean regions who are striving hard to represent their country on an international platform.

Kim Collins still holds the national record of 9.93 in the men’s 100m and had the incredible feat of being the first 40-year-old to break the 10-second barrier, his legacy is truly one of greatness.

The Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew asserted thank you to Kim Collins for showing the world what it means to be a true champion by hailing from one of the world’s smallest nation, St Kitts and Nevis.

Moreover, the Minister of Sports of St Kitts and Nevis also celebrates Kim Collins Day and called him “a true sports icon.” He noted that Kim showed resilience and determination that allowed him to sprint past all the world’s top 100m athletes, to write his name in the history books forever, becoming the 2003 Champion, in Paris, France.

“His triumph wasn’t just a win for St. Kitts-Nevis, but a proud moment for the entire Caribbean! Today, we honor and celebrate the legacy of KIM COLLINS, a true sports icon,” noted Minister Samal Duggins.

The St Kitts and Nevis Athletic Association also recognized the contribution of Kim Anderson Collins for the development of the sports sector in the island nation. They noted that the world stood still for 10.07 seconds when Collins captured the coveted 100m World Championship title.

They also added that they are still the smallest nation to capture that crown. The SKN Athletic Association also mentioned that Kim Collins has achieved huge accomplishments in his life but nothing is more memorable than hearing “Kim Collins in lane one has done it!”
