Saint Lucia: Venezuelan Ambassador to Saint Lucia LiefF Escalona paid a courtesy call on Minister for Education Shawn Edward to discuss expanding cooperation between the two countries in the area of education on January 20, 2023.

According to an official Facebook page named Edu Saint Lucia, a key among talking point at the discussion, which also included the participation of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Michelle Charles, was assistance to Saint Lucia in the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) area as well as support for programmes of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community college the SALCC.

According to a previous update, specialists from the Ministry of Health and Wellness met recently with officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Commerce and planned to dialogue with other stakeholders in an effort to find the correct approach to reducing the purchase and consumption of beverages with high sugar content at schools on the island.

Saint Lucia has been recorded as having one of the highest rates of diabetes in the region and, indeed, the world. The efforts will help stem the high rate of this and other chronic and non-communicable diseases on the island, beginning with the youngest population of the nation.
