Saint Lucia: Closure of Sea Turtle Fishery announced on New Year’s Day

Sea Turtle Fishery will remain closed on January 1, 2024 (Monday) on the occasion of New Year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development informs the public about this.

Saint Lucia: Sea Turtle Fishery will remain closed on January 1, 2024 (Monday) on the occasion of New Year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development informs the public about this.

On this, the ministry informed the public about the cease in harvesting, sale and consumption of sea turtle meat at midnight on December 31, 2023 (Sunday)

The ministry of agriculture stated that as per the law, there is prohibition on harvesting, selling, purchasing and consuming sea turtles during closed season. Any activity is completely prohibited, even any part or its product; be it, meat, shell or other parts are included in it.

The closing period is connected to the peak periods when sea turtles undergo reproduction. Als, it is introduced to make animals allow to mature and revive in the population. Noticeably, the terms with this season may even result in the extension of closure.

For the smooth run in the region, the ministry further appeals to the public, fishers and vendors to take every step as per the regulations of closed season. Also, the ministry appeals all the residents to inform and report any of the following, in case anyone is known to be in possession of sea turtles:

  • Praedial Larceny Unit
  • Marine Police
  • Nearest Police Station
  • Department of Fisheries

From all these, information can be reported to any. Also, if anyone caught or found dealing against the laws in the closed soon as relates to sea turtle, whole or any part or product. He or she shall have to pay the penalty and will be liable to EC$5000 (five thousand dollars).
