St Vincent and the Grenadines: Over 400 students from Union Island to continue their primary and secondary education on mainland St. Vincent post Hurricane Beryl. The information was shared by the Prime Minister of the country, Dr Ralph Gonsalves.
The Prime Minister noted that that it is not possible to reconstruct the schools by September because of the other things that are necessary includes, housing. He also noted that on Union Island, the total number of students in secondary school includes 202 on the other hand, 250 in two primary schools.
He further asserted that they are making efforts to put their money into the estimates by fixing up and extending the old teacher’s college i.e. Richmond Gabriel University. The Prime Minister remarked that they will have to combine two primary schools in order to address the issue of accommodations for both teachers and parents.
PM Gonsalves pointed that they will have to bring up the teachers as many of them are from Union Island and also at least one parent in order to take proper care for the children. For the same, the PM has requested the Ministry of Tourism in order to reserve enough guest space for the next 10 months.
The Prime Minister noted that the tourism ministry needs to allocate space for around a thousand individuals and ensure adequate support for them. He also stated that he does not want any of students to face disadvantages.
While sharing his wish, he stated that he wants all his children to begin their instructional time at around the same time regardless of any location. And, the students who are in affected areas should not feel disadvantaged due to it.
Notably, the devastating effects of Hurricane Beryl demolished more than 90% of the building and created severe destructions. Due to this, several people were left homeless including the death of one individual.
The Prime Minister, Ralph Gonsalves is also getting support from his neighbouring nations and has promised to make stringent efforts to take back the island nation to its normal period after Hurricane Beryl.
