Moment of immense joy: PM Mia Mottley as AU joins G20

Bridgetown, Barbados: The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, extended heartfelt congratulations towards the African Union (AU) as it becomes a prominent part of G20. She highlighted that becoming a permanent member of G20 is a moment of immense joy.

Mia Mottley, through her official X account, mentioned that after being counted as a G20 nation, Africa will now take a rightful place among the economic leaders of the world.

“The African Union’s admission to the G20 as a permanent member should be met with immense joy and optimism. Africa can now take their rightful place among the world’s economic leaders,” the post by PM Mottley read.

She furthermore expressed her gratitude and happiness about this decision and stated, “I celebrate this decision and commend the leaders of the G20 nations for taking this step.”

It is to be noted that the African Union became a member of the Group 20 countries on Saturday, September 09, 2023. The chief of the African Union was welcomed and greeted by the Prime Minister of India – Narendra Modi, who announced its entry into the group of largest economies of the world.

The announcement was made by PM Modi during his opening remarks at the inaugural session of the two-day G20 Summit. He outlined that he is glad to welcome the 55-nation AU as the new members of the grouping.

Following this historic announcement, Prime Minister Modi hugged the Union of Comoros President and AU chairperson Azali Assoumani and asked him to take the seat as a full member of Group 20.

G20 in India:

The eighteenth meeting of the G20 (Group of Twenty) Summit was organised in New Delhi, India. The meeting was held on September 9 and 10, 2023, at Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre, Pragati Maidan. It was a historic moment for the people and government of India as it was the first-ever meeting held in India.

Many international leaders praised and lauded the government of India for hosting outstanding and exceptional Summit.
