Dominica: Teachers in Dominica are being trained on strategies for efficient learning through a Professional Development Training regulated by the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training, and National Excellence.
Proposed by a decision of the Education Minister to concentrate on teaching and learning for the short to common term, the training session began today and will continue until Friday, February 19, 2021.
Acting Chief Education Officer, Dr. Jeffrey Blaize, stated, “We have decided to spend time in sensitizing our teachers on strategies for effective education,”
Furthermore, he added, “So significantly during the next couple days, we will be having a set of workshops with our teachers concentrating on areas of lack that we have recognized in our national evaluation.”
Dr. Blaize affirmed, “For example, in the grade 2 and 4 national evaluation we have recognized that there are difficulties with students in the areas of writing, in the area of understanding skills, and so we decided to begin on training for teachers in terms of efficient delivery in those areas.”
He added, the Ministry of Education is also using a training program that blends technology with the classroom setting “because we acknowledge that the use of technology with the classroom is significant.”
According to Dr. Blaize, teachers will also be refined to the teaching of English as a second language in consideration of the Haitian, Spanish speaking, and Chinese population of scholars in Dominican classrooms.
“In many situations, these students are very bright, but they have difficulties in learning in terms of the barrier for the English language.”
He asserted that principals are also being inspired to participate in those training sessions, “because we acknowledge that the only way we can guarantee the implementation of plans is for management at the school level to be on board with us in terms of, firstly being knowledgeable of the strategies and then observing to guarantee that there is supervision that the teachers are exercising the strategies in their daily classroom activities.”
