Man beaten and set ablaze in Guyana

Rayad Mohamed, a 22-year-old resident of Unity, East Coast Demerara, Guyana was beaten and set on fire by the three men on Sunday, 5th November 2023.
This incident took place between 10:55 to 11:00 hours.
According to the information, the victim was accused of robbing the brother of one of the accused, on 5th November.
Three men confronted Rayad Mohamed and beat him first, then set him on fire.
Out of these three men, one has been identified as Khamalnarine Jaggernauth, 24-year-old, resident of Lot 117 Unity Village, ECD who is a barber by profession.
The villagers informed the police about this matter and the officers from Guyana’s Police Department responded immediately.
Police officials found the victim lying in front of a barbershop with burn marks all over his body.
Then, Rayad Mohamed was taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where he was admitted and examined by the doctors on duty.
The accused, Khamalnarine Jaggernauth, has been apprehended by the officials of Mahaica Police Station and charged for the following offense:
– Attempt to murder under Section 103(c) of the Criminal Law Act
He appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court, where he eventually remanded.
Just a few days ago, Guyana witnessed a similar incident where a man in his early twenties, who has been identified as “Reaz”, was beaten and set on fire by several men.
The incident took place at Unity Village at the second corner of the Cremation Road.
According to the reports, Reaz’s mental condition is not normal. Reports suggest that he was homeless and has no members in his family.
The villagers are demanding a proper investigation, ensuring that the victim receives justice.
People shared their opinions on this matter:
One person commented: Omg, people are so cruel and have no empathy. Where are we heading so sad? I guess these people that did this surely have families, how would they like this to to be done to their families? If? If he did something wrong, the law is there; just turn him into the law. This is really inhuman.
A second person commented: Unacceptable in society. May the law deal with them severely. Speedy recovery to Reaz.
Another individual commented: How can one be so cruel to another human being?? If God were to judge each one of us- would you like him to punish us in that way??
