Guyana Ministry of Labour organises Skills programme for 84 trainees

Guyana: The Ministry of Labour organised Skills programmes such as Electrical Installation, Information Technology, Joinery, Garment Construction, and Commercial Food Preparation launched for eighty- four (84) trainees, comprised of twenty-six (26) males and Fifty- eight (58) females.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, spearheaded the launch along with Region Two Technical Officer Mohammed Shaheed and Region Two Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva, held on Friday, September 17, 2022, at the Charity Secondary School.

At Charity Secondary School, twelve (12) trainees will pursue training in Electrical Installation, fifteen (15) in Information Technology with twelve (12) in Joinery. At the Charity Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC), twelve trainees (12) will pursue training in Garment Construction.

Further, courses such as Electrical Installation and Joinery will have twelve (12) trainees, each with thirteen (13) signed onto Commercial Food Preparation, which will be held at May 8 Secondary School, Dartmouth Village Essequibo Coast.

Brief remarks were made by Minister Hamilton and Region Two, Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva, who both highlighted the importance of programmes and how impactful it is to transform the lives of beneficiaries and their communities.

Earlier, the Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), ventured on a series of outreach activities between September 12-14, 2022, in Region 9 to raise understanding of the issue of Child Labour and the detrimental emotional and physic effects that children forced child labour can experience.

The team was led by the Chief Labour Officer (CLO), Dhaneshwar Deonarine, accompanied by Labour Officers Prandatt Basdeo, Denise Duncan, Mark Burnett and John Thomas, who visited and held discussions on the issue of child labour with the residents of Kumu and Surama Villages and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of Arapaima Primary School.

Additionally, presentations were made to the students at St. Ignatius Secondary School, Arapaima Primary School, Kumu Primary School, Ananaputa Primary School, and Annai Secondary School.
