Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the United States Embassy, launched a Surgical and Dental Outreach by the Lesser Antilles Medical Assistants Team (LAMAT) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on February 22, 2023.
The LAMAT team comprises US Army and Air Force Medical Professionals equipped to conduct surgeries and provide dental treatments. The team is expected to perform 80 surgeries and 200 dental services during their mission in Guyana. Surgeries will occur at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and West Demerara Regional Hospital.
During his feature address, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, Advisor to the Minister of Health, stated that the US Government had played a critical role in developing the Guyana Health Care System.
“We want to ensure that people are not only living longer but are living most of their years disability-free. We recognise that this will not be achieved by throwing money at the problem, but through working, collaborating and learning from others as we maximise and strengthen the health care system,” Dr Ramsammy said.
He said that the Ministry looks towards strengthened relationships with the US Government and other partners.
While delivering her remarks, Sarah Ann-Lynch, United States Ambassador, said that the mission represents the United States’ commitment to the people of Guyana as the country continues its astounding trajectory toward increased prosperity and development.
Among those present at the launching ceremony were Dr Veronica Griffith, Deputy Director of Regional Health Services; Mr Robbie Rambarran, the Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC; Dr Navindranauth Rambaran, Director of Professional Services; Lt Col Gentry Mobley, Mission Commander of LAMAT; Major General Pettus, Air Force Southern and Southern Commander and other members of LAMAT.
