Guyana: 11 year old gives birth, father arrested as suspect in case

The Guyana Police Force has arrested the father as a suspect for the offence of impregnating an eleven-year-old girl. The incident is of Region Nine and has shocked the locals and officials after an 11-year-old gave birth at the Georgetown Hospital.

According to the reports, it is stated that the 11-year-old girl was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she was admitted earlier this week.

The Doctors performed the C-section surgery to bring the life to the world on Wednesday, September 11.

The medical officials reported that the girl is undergoing treatment and is recovering at the GPHC.

The authorities were informed about this incident through a social media post, reacting to which they immediately carried out an investigation.

The Ministry of Human Services, Guyana, shared that they have investigated the matter through Guyana’s Child Care and Protection Agency.

The statement mentioned, “The Ministry through the Childcare and Protection Agency would like to inform the public that the situation was investigated thoroughly.”

It further stated that the matter was reported to the Guyana Police Force, and after the investigation, they held an alleged perpetrator.

Currently, the case file is with the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), the statement noted.

A source during a conversation with a local media channel shared that the family has been visiting several organizations for the case since May, but nobody helped them. The source further stated that they were sure that someone in the family or a close relative had impregnated her, but she was tight lipped.

They were sure that it was not her father but someone living nearby.

The locals have been in rage after the news spread on social media, reacting to it, one user with name Jasma Nagreadi commented, “Whatever act was done, agree that the Rapist was wrong, but they had up to three months to get raid of the baby, before it reach this embarrassing stage. Getting pregnant is something coming into the world. Not something going. Why did they allow till now..”

Another user commented, “This is very distasteful and awfully sad for an 11 year old to experience such ordeal as she is a baby. Her parents would have to take care of her baby and let her continue her schooling. I also blame her parents and the person who did that should face the full blunt of the law. He is a mature adult but he acted in a very in humane manner. He has to pay dear for his stupidity. The time is ear, it is written, children will bring forth.children.”

It is to be noted that the girl is currently receiving psychosocial and medical support at the hospital and will be discharged only when the authorities approve of it.
