Guyana: The increased cases of malaria in Guyana are a cause for great concern. Malaria is a potentially fatal disease caused by a mosquito-borne parasite. It is a leading cause of death in many developing countries, including Guyana. There are several reasons for the increased cases of malaria in Guyana. One reason is the increased resistance of the parasite to the most common anti-malarial drugs.
When people are infected with the parasite, they may not show any symptoms for weeks or even months. This makes it difficult to diagnose and treat the disease in its early stages.
The government of Guyana is working to improve the situation. They are working to increase access to quality health care and to improve the quality of the drugs that are available.
The government is also working to educate people about the importance of using mosquito nets and taking other precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
The Health Ministry of Guyana has outlined that ending Malaria remains a top priority for the Government of Guyana. On November 4, 2022, the Ministry of Health (MOH) in collaboration with Breakthrough ACTION Guyana – a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) flagship funded project, and the Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) launched the Guyana Malaria Public Private Partnership Framework and National Malaria Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) Strategy.
The Ministry of Health has also started a campaign “Reaching Zero Malaria” by November 6, 2022, which is marked as Malaria Day in the Americas. The ministry has stated that Malaria is a preventable and curable disease and we all together will fight against it.
