Government finalizes August 26 for funeral of Sir Lester Bird

The government finalized August 26 for the funeral of Sir Lester Bird, former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. He was person known for his contribution to the development of the country and the region. The funeral was dated for Wednesday, but now it had been postponed. This decision was taken by Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

A statement by cabinet said that Sir Lester’s body would lie in state in the Parliament on the first day, allowing everyone an opportunity to pay their last respects.

According to the statement on the second day, the body of Sir Lester would be lying at 46 North Street, which is home of the Trades and Labour Union of Antigua and Barbuda, the place from where Sir Lester led the institution of the ABLP [Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party] for more than one decade. On the third day, August 26, an official holiday had been declared, allowing all to attend the State Funeral that is supposed to be held at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.

Cabinet announced the tribute and other honours (posthumously) presented on the late statesman. These tributes include a National Heroes Cemetery that would commemorate his life and legacy. Additionally, a joint Parliamentary Session to honour him would be convened on August 17.

The second Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Lester Bird, died at the age of 83. He took his last breath in the morning at 6 am on Monday, August 9, 2021. This information was given by the Prime Minister office of Antigua and Barbuda in the early morning, stating that the country had lost one of the most distinguishes and heroic sons.

The acting Prime Minister ordered that all flags be flown at half-mast and order be executed immediately. As Prime Minister Gaston Browne returned to the country on Monday. The government has also ordered the planning of state-funeral at the date on which all should be agreed.

Sir Lester Bryant served as the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 1994 to 2004. In his time, he was a recognized athlete of his country. Sir Bird’s started his political career began in 1971. During that year, he was nominated for the Antigua and Barbuda. He was also named the chairman of the ALP and the Leader of the opposition in that Senate.
