CSG Patricia Scotland expresses grief over Pakistan floods

Commonwealth: The Secretary General of the Commonwealth – Patricia Scotland, has expressed grief over the floods witnessed by the people of Pakistan. She stated that the news had disturbed not only the country but also the world.

She further stated that her prayers and good wishes are with the people of Pakistan and that the whole Commonwealth of Caribbean is ready to assist the country during such a tough time.

Commonwealth Secretary-General – Patricia Scotland took social media and mentioned, “Devastated by news and impact of the flooding in Pakistan.”

She further added, “These types of events demonstrate the need to act on climate now. My prayers are with all those who are affected, and The Commonwealth stands ready to assist in any way we can.”

As per the latest condition in Pakistan, authorities have predicted that the country needs an emergency appeal for international humanitarian aid as the death toll from 2022’s “monster monsoon” has crossed the mark of 1,000. The country has been dealing with flooding from weeks of torrential rain and has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless, reeling from the deep economic crisis.

The government of Pakistan has stated that at least 1,061 people have succumbed to climate catastrophe that started with the seasonal monsoon rains in mid-June. There are expectations that the toll will increase as many communities living in the mountainous northern region are cut off, and many rivers and roads are washed away.

Rescue operation is ongoing in the country, and army helicopters were struggling to pluck people cut off by raging torrents up to safety in the north, where steep hills and valleys make for treacherous flying conditions.

Many rivers in the region — which is a picturesque tourist destination when there aren’t monsoon rains — have burst their banks, sweeping away scores of buildings, including a 150-room hotel that crumbled into a raging torrent.
