CARICOM launches survey to provide data on regional youth development status

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has launched a Regional Youth Development Status Survey, under which data will be gathered regarding challenges that come in between the youth development. 

It will also assemble data on opportunities that young people have for a – sound education, employment and entrepreneurship, including the factors that support their health and well-being.   

CARICOM Secretariat further highlighted that this wide-ranging survey would also collect data on the knowledge of youth on climate change and its repercussions on their sustainable economic development.

This survey has been launched after ten years, the CARICOM Youth Development Action Plan (CYDAP) was adopted, and will be targeting the age group of 10 to 29 years across the member states of the region and the associate members of the CARICOM. 

CARICOM cited, “Given the present global, regional and the national socio-economic issues which have been caused by the – COVID 19 pandemic, the Secretariat is now re-assessing the status of youth development in the region via the – Regional Youth Development Status Survey”. 

In the year 2006, the Conference of Heads of Government mandated the establishment of a – CARICOM Commission on Youth Development to- initiate a full-scale analysis of the challenges and as well as the opportunities for youth in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy – (CSME), and was later established in the year of 2007. 

The youth development commission consists of youth leaders and technocrats who did research on the youth’s condition in the region and then prepared their report titled – “Eye on the Future: Investing in Youth Now for Tomorrow’s Community“. 

The report was then presented to a – Special Summit of CARICOM Heads of Government on Youth, which took place in Suriname in January 2010.

This survey will surely provide the regional organisation with the data related to the mechanisms to strengthen national and regional partnerships towards youth development.
