Antoine Destang records two personal bests at Junior Pan Pacific Championships

The 18-year-old Saint Lucian swimmer recorded personal bests in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle, while reaching three B Finals at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver.

Saint Lucia: Swimmer Antoine Destang ended his 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships campaign with two personal bests and three appearances in B Finals. He took part in six events, competing against swimmers from different regions, North America, Asia, and Oceania.

The 18-year-old University of Michigan student participated in the event held at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, Canada. It took place across four days, from August 18 to August 21, 2026.

Destang opened the competition with the men’s 50m butterfly event. He recorded 25.02 seconds in the preliminary heats, improving his previous 0.14 seconds personal best. The swimmer later returned for the B Final round and finished with 25.12 seconds.

He also competed in the 100m backstroke event on the first day of the tournament. Destang finished the race in 59.32 seconds. This feat put him at the 25th place overall and was faster than his seed time of 59.99 seconds.

The Saint Lucian swimmer also participated in the 100m freestyle race on Tuesday and finished in 51.89 seconds. He participated in the 50m backstroke race, in which his timing of 27.89 seconds put him in the 24th spot in the preliminarily standings.

On Wednesday, he participated in the 100m butterfly event. He timed 56.27 seconds in the heats to qualify himself in the B Final race. He further improved his position in the final race by timing 56.56 seconds and ranked 16th overall.

Destang’s final appearance came in the 50m freestyle. He achieved another personal best time of 23.68 seconds in the prelims round and beat his previous best time by 0.2 seconds. He achieved the same time record in the B Final and placed 10th in the event and 20th overall.

This event allowed Destang to gain more experience swimming against other good junior swimmers. His two person best times will help him improve his swimming career at the University of Michigan.
