CARICOM Chairman Browne refused to military presence in Haiti

Chairman of CARICOM PM Gaston Browne refused for the plan of military presence in Haiti. He expects that the country has been doing the investigation sufficiently to find the reason and person behind the assassination of their President Jovenel Moise, who was shot dead last Wednesday. 

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), Helen La Lime, said that the Haitian government have been requesting for foreign troops for the security in the country as well as investigations to find the truth behind the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. Haiti should specify exactly what they have been looking for

PM Gaston Browne said that according to him, any intervention would have to be at the invitation of the Haitian people. He thinks what has important here has for CARICOM to take the lead with the support of the international community to help the Haitian people to come up with an indigenous solution. PM Gaston Browne said that They had to be very careful that they do not appear as though they have been meddling in the internal politics of Haiti.

PM Gaston Browne said that Haitians might recall in 1915 that the US would have invaded Haiti and would have supported the Duvaliers (former leaders), and so with those suspicions, PM Browne said that an approach should be one of CARICOM taking the lead supported by the necessary resources and expertise by the US, France, Canada and any other country concerned about the instability in Haiti and that would like to facilitate the strengthening the democratic institutions within Haiti.

La Lime said that the Haitian authorities have been working to having the first round of elections on September 26, with a second-round set for November.

Haiti must not “lose its way” after the tragedy that Haiti had experienced in past days and left Haiti critically injured. Martine Moise, the widow of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moise, stated.

Martine Moise said the attack that killed her husband happened in the blink of an eye, without even giving President a chance to say a word. Martine Moise said in the audio message that has been posted on her official Twitter account on Saturday. This was the first her first interaction after the attack that shook the whole of Haiti.

President of Haiti Jovenel Moise was assassinated by a group of unidentified people with guns. They assassinated the president by shooting him with guns at 1:00 a.m on Wednesday. The killing of President Jovenel Moise comes amid deepening political and economic stability and a spike in gang violence.
