Caribbean leaders mourn on demise of Archbishop Tutu

Caribbean leaders and CARICOM mourned the demise of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu at the age of 90 on Sunday.

CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr Carla Barnett, “Archbishop Tutu’s strong moral voice was a very significant factor in the successful struggle against the brutal racist policy of Apartheid in his homeland. His compassionate leadership of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission during the sensitive transition period that followed the end of Apartheid further elevated his national and global esteem”.

Prime Minister of Dominica Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, cited, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who stood up against apartheid. He dedicated his whole life to the benevolence of his country, becoming an inspiration for many. I pay my sincere condolences to his family & the people of South Africa”.

Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali sending condolences to the People and Government of South Africa, asserted, “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the Government and the people of the Republic of South Africa on the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu, a man who contributed to a liberated South Africa”.

“Archbishop Tutu was an embodiment of faith and dedication who contributed his time and service to the wellbeing and goodwill of others,” he added.

Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis cited, “Saddened to hear of the passing of ArchbishopDesmondTutu veteran fighter against Apartheid and head of the historical truth and Reconciliation Commission in southafrica. He was a man of principles and bequeathed a legacy of upholding HumanRights”.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated, “We mourn his passing, but his life, work, and example give us much to celebrate and emulate. He is a man of peace, dignity and goodwill, a man of God who, with grace and humility, overcame a system of oppression and cruelty. May his soul Rest In Peace & his example shine eternally”.

St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre highlighted that Tutu had inspired his generation, adding, “Your work on human rights and anti-apartheid awakened and helped shape the consciousness of many Caribbean Leaders. May we continue in your good stead, paying heed to your spiritual teachings. Rest in peace”.
