Barbados confirms 63 new positive coronavirus cases

Barbados: The island reported 63 new positive coronavirus cases on Sunday, February 14. These new positives include sequences of samples dating back to February 1.

According to the report, The Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory is in the process of reducing the backlog created by the short use of manual extraction in the processing of specimens. The lab performed 534 tests.

There were 21 recoveries, bringing the number of active cases to 646.

One person, a 51-year-old Queen Elizabeth Hospital Nursing Assistant, passed away from COVID-19 on Sunday. She was a patient at the Harrison Point Isolation Facility for nine days. The number of deaths from the virus is now 25.

The 63 positive coronavirus cases comprise 29 women and 34 men. Four of them had been at the Harrison Point Isolation Facility undergoing evaluation to determine whether their positive PCR test outcome showed that they were, in fact, newly positive or whether they had coronavirus in the past and were no longer infectious.

The 59 other cases include 57 Barbadians and one non-resident.

The total number of individuals identified as positive at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds is 363. Of these, 361 have redeemed, and the remaining two inmates are included in the active coronavirus cases.

A Barbadian commented, “I am amazed at the pace of deaths now, versus the first half of the pandemic. Are lessons learned about the treatment being used?”

Barbados has reported 2,331 confirmed cases – 1,032 females and 1,299 males – and 1,660 persons have redeemed. The public health laboratory has so far finished 114,562 tests. (BGIS)
