Antigua and Barbuda embarks on major road development initiative in Bendals

The Antigua and Barbuda government has embarked on a major infrastructure upgrade in Bendals, including concrete roads, as part of its National Roads Programme.

This project, within the remit of the Urban Renewal Department through the National Housing and Urban Renewal Company Ltd., represents one of the important steps being taken to upgrade the country’s road network in order to improve transportation and connectivity.

These were announced in an interview with Senator Rawdon Turner, executive chairman of National Housing. As outlined by the senator, these roads in Bendals mark only the beginning of infrastructure improvements throughout both urban and rural areas of this nation.

The National Roads Programme is devised to rid Antigua and Barbuda of its chronic road problems, providing durable and well-maintained roads that will make traveling easier for its residents.

“Improving the road network in Bendals is not just about upgrading transportation routes, but it’s also about uplifting the livelihood of its residents with better access to basic services and connecting communities more effectively,” Senator Turner said.

Besides Bendals, the Urban Renewal Department will also expand the road construction in the other major areas in Antigua and Barbuda. These infrastructural developments form part of the national vision for a sustainable development by the government via an investment in infrastructure that will support economic and social development.

The improved road network is more likely to spark off economic activities as the access to markets and other services becomes easier alongside the transport system.

This action shows how serious the government is about its pursuit of development goals in the long term. To address the plight faced both in urban and rural areas, the National Roads Programme effectively seeks to bridge such gaps between communities and ensures that the improvements are felt island wide.

Senator Turner concluded by adding that the road projects were planned to be resilient, with materials like concrete to ensure that they will last a lifetime, especially against the forces of weather conditions in the different regions.

As the road development projects are planned and expanded, at the same time the government is looking to the bigger impact caused by such upgrading.

Beyond physical improvement, better infrastructure is envisioned as a means of increasing greater economic opportunities since the improved infrastructure will allow the movement of goods and people around the island with much greater ease than before.

This improvement in roadways in Bendals and other communities is putting Antigua and Barbuda on the brink of further expansion, with the growth of the island nation to be shown to involve every citizen in the modernization drive of the country.

The extension of roadworks underlines the commitment of the government to infrastructure development as the bedrock of its extended national goals, with connectivity and prosperity for Antigua and Barbuda.
