Grand Bay by-elections to be held on November 25, says Roosevelt Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit declared that the Grand Bay by-elections would be held on November 25 2021. He said candidates could file nominations on November 9 2021.

The by-elections will fill the vacant seat of the Grand Bay constituency, which went vacant after the demise of Edward Registe on September 1, 2021.”

Prime Minister added, “Section 55 of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica provisions that – when a seat of a representative falls vacant, by reason or dissolution of the house, a re-election must be held to fill the vacant seat within 3 months of the emptiness unless three houses is sooner dissolved. ”

The leader of Dominica Labour Party further noted that the party would opt for virtual campaigns following the COVID-19 outbreak and taking into consideration of the general public.

He noted that all the events would be done via live streamings and Zoom meetings, taking instances from the elections held in the neighbouring Caribbean countries.

“In the interest of safety, we will engage in non-traditional modes of campaigning to include meetings streamed by online platforms, radio, television and more targeted interactions through meeting platforms such as – Zoom”, he cited.

PM Skerrit noted that the Ministry of Health, Wellness and New Health Investment would ensure that every election-related activity is conducted under COVID-19 health protocols.

Vince Henderson will be a representative from Grand Bay Constituency for Dominica Labour Party. He is the permanent representative of Dominica to the Organization of American States – (OAS) and ambassador to the United States. He was also the Foreign Minister in 2008 but was later denied to contest elections in 2009.

Apart from this, the Prime Minister asked the citizens to abide by the COVID-19 health measures and also wished for peaceful and safe re-elections.
