Authorities to hand over 40 hurricane resilient houses next month, announces Melissa Skerrit
The Minister of Housing, Land & Urban Development, Melissa Skerrit made the announcement through her social media handle for availing the keys of a new hurricane-resilient home to the 40 deserving families by next month.

Roseau, Dominica: The Minister of Housing, Land & Urban Development, Melissa Skerrit made an announcement through her social media handle for handing over the keys of newly constructed hurricane-resilient homes to the 40 deserving families by next month.
“Next month, 40 deserving families will be given the most wonderful gift: the keys to their new hurricane-resilient home,” quoted Minister Melissa Skerrit.
This initiative was made possible through the Housing Recovery Project which is held in collaboration with the World Bank. The Government through such actions aims at uplifting the living conditions of the citizens of Dominica.
The citizens of the country even extended appreciation towards the officials for their great efforts.
“Fantastic project, government working for the people, that is what is called government for the people,” mentioned one of the netizens.
In the month of December in 2023, the government handed over the keys of climate-resilient homes to 73 families. The keys were handed over to the families as a part of a Christmas gift. At the time, the Minister, Melissa Skerrit titled the initiative as “First Christmas in our new home 2023.”
The Housing Recovery Project was introduced by the Government of Dominica which aimed at replacing the destroyed houses by building resilience in the housing sector. Under this the Government projected handing over 5000 keys of resilient houses.
The Government of Dominica introduced the housing project, also named the Future Housing Programme, in July 2022. While introducing the programme, the authorities even highlighted that the government knows the importance of homeownership, emphasizing that it is much more than just putting a roof over the head of a family.
At the time, Hurricane Maria hit the country in 2017, the condition of the country was vulnerable and the government vowed to improve it. Under this only, the authorities promised to avail the resilient houses to the residents for the sake of providing safe shelter to the people of Dominica.
