Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has excited his fans in Guyana with the announcement that he may perform a long-awaited performance in the country in early 2025.
Kartel, in a recent video posted on Instagram, stood speaking to his fans, particularly those in Guyana, asking them to start saving money for what he suggested could be a lively event for next year. “Guyana, next year, a blood—at trouble. Gwan save up unno money, yeh hear. I’m forwarding,” Kartel declared, shifting from what he had said about performing in the country previously.
This event raised the level of enthusiasm due to the fact that the Guyanese government and the artist have been having some friction for a number of years, and this is what make the announced performance quite auspicious for the people as well as the artist.
The relationship between Kartel and Guyana has been sour since 2011 following his falling out with the country’s National Communications Network (NCN), the state broadcaster, after the station banned some of his songs.
The songs were banned because they felt too violent and certain sections of the lyrics were inappropriate to be played on radio. As a result of this, Kartel was triggered and thus announced that he banned himself from further any performing in the country. He even went further to say, “I would rather go for a tour in Iraq than travelling to Guyana.”
This decision came after Kartel’s refusal to perform in a government sponsored event, the Jam Zone Summer Break, which worsened the relationship between both parties. NCN went forth to explain that the ban applied to only some of Kartel’s songs, to emphasize on the fact that their stand was against any music or content that inclines to violence.
However, as things continued, 2024 is depicted as a dramatic shift in Kartel’s life and his music career. Kartel was imprisoned for thirteen years for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams in 2011, but this year, the conviction was nullified by the Privy Council to set him free.
Since his release, Kartel has been working relentlessly to make a comeback to the stage. He is currently planning to perform on December 31, 2024, in Jamaica. This show alone has sparked a lot of enthusiasm with the fan base waiting for more information to be released and the artist to make a comeback.
Besides the possible Guyana show as stated, Kartel has mentioned that he is planning to stage a show in Barbados as well as in Trinidad and Tobago, which is a clear indication that he wants to perform in and be a part of Caribbean entertainment again.
For his Guyanese fans who endured and continued following him, despite the existing bitter history, the possibility of watching Kartel perform live in 2025 is incredible. Apparently, as details emerge, this concert to be performed in Guyana, could be a concert for unity and a new beginning for Vybz Kartel.
