Seven Caribbean countries votes in favour UN resolution against Russia

Caribbean: Amid the Ukraine-Russia crisis, the countries across the world have been showing support towards the UN resolution against Russian aggression towards Ukraine.

The Higher Commissioner of Barbados and Eastern Caribbean, Scott Furssedonn-Wood, on March 2, informed that 141 countries have voted in favour of the United Nations resolution against the Russian Federation’s aggression towards Ukraine.

These countries include seven (7) Caribbean nations – Barbados, St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada.

While voting, 35 countries, including India, China, Pakistan, Cuba etc., haven’t cast a vote, and five (5) countries have voted against the UN resolution. These five countries are – Russia, Syria, North Korea, Eritrea, and Belarus.

Earlier, various CARICOM leaders expressed grief and condemned the attack by the Russian troops. While showing concern, Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated, “United Nations Charter set out the parameters which should be followed to maintain peace and sovereignty of every country. These actions are contrary to maintaining international peace and security, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter”.

He further outlined that “The ongoing crisis is not relevant, and the government of Dominica always prefers diplomatic talks, and we urged for a return to diplomatic dialogue to stop the constant turmoil”.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley condemned the Russia-Ukraine crisis and mentioned, “The things happening between Ukraine as well as Russia over the past few weeks have been quite disturbing for the countries, but the United Nations and other firm leaders should adopt adequate steps which all states depend for the safety and security”.

St Lucian Prime Minister Philip J Pierre is among the CARICOM leaders who expressed deep concern. He stated, “We condemn in the strongest terms the military invasion and attacks on Ukraine by the Russian Federation and call for an immediate cessation of all hostile and provocative actions against Ukraine and called for the immediate withdrawal of military. Equally, we call for a speedy return to dialogue and diplomacy as a basis for all parties to listen and respond to each other’s concerns.”
