St Kitts and Nevis: The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) hosted a special sitting in honour of the former Premier of Nevis, the late Ambassador Vance Amory, on April 19, 2022 (Tuesday).

Parliamentarians from St Kitts journeyed to Nevis to participate in Tuesday’s event to pay respect to late Amory.

The attendees of the event were Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris; Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards; Premier of Nevis, Mark Brantley, Jonel Powel, Lindsay Grant; Akilah Byron-Nisbett; Wendy Phipps; Cabinet Secretary Josephine Huggins, as well as Leader of the Opposition Denzil Douglas; Geoffrey Hanley, and the nation’s only living National Hero, Dr Kennedy Simmonds.

Many in attendance gave glowing tributes towards Amory, highlighting the legacy he has left behind.

During the event, Prime Minister Harris highlighted the stellar contribution made to the education sector in the Federation by the late Ambassador and former Premier of Nevis – Amory. Prime Minister described Amory as a stalwart, an astute politician and an elder statesman.

Prime Minister Harris stated, “Mr President, one of the truisms about Ambassador Amory was his scholarship and love for learning. I was drawn to the fact that he taught Latin and had a well-rounded knowledge of classical literature, such as the works of Shakespeare. Even for the most erudite of scholars, these subjects are anything but easy if one is serious about their mastery.”

PM Harris, during his address at the Special Sitting of the Nevis Island Assembly held in honour of His Excellency Amory, “Ambassador Amory mastered both with ease, without any flair, flourish or fits of fancy – simply because he had nothing to prove to himself or to others. He knew who Vance was; he was comfortable in his own skin. And what we saw was what we got, no icing, frills, trimmings or airs of any kind.”
