Guyana: The Ministry of Labour is currently hosting a three-day Joint Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Committee Training Programme for representatives of the National Referral Hospital Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC).
The programme conducted at the GPHC Multi-Purpose Room was developed to train members of the Joint Workplace Safety and Health Committee (JWSHC) established with GPHC and enables them to execute the workplace as mandated by the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
By the end of the training, the representatives present will be equipped with sufficient knowledge as well as skills to develop and maintain safe systems and methods of work, which will ultimately minimize or eliminate workplace accidents.
Expectedly following the completion of the training, the participants will also conduct an inspection of the workplace and prepare a place to control or eliminate hazards in their own workplaces.
Certification would be provided to the workplace and the participants, which are valid for one year.
The opening of the programme saw in attendance Senior Officials such as Rohmena Chung, Director of Human Resources and Roydon Croal, Senior Occupational Safety and Health Officer/ Lead Facilitator, along with Johana Vaughn and Marsha Jacobs, Occupational Safety Officers, Ministry of Labour who will assist with the practical exercises.
Today’s session featured oral and video presentations, role-play group studies, and case studies. The other sessions will see similar activities being done as well.
Earlier, a team from the University of the Southern Caribbean University (USC) met with minister Joseph Hamilton and the CEO of BIT, Richard Maughn. The team of USC were President of USC, Colwick Wilson, Onesi LaFleur, Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management, Interim Dean School of Business Entrepreneurship, Mignon Sancho and Director of USC Guyana Extension Site, Trea Johnson.
The engagement focused on strengthening the institutions’ presence and collaboration with the ministry to the benefit of Guyanese through Technical Training.
