Grenada: Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada, received the document of accession from the Republic of Guyana, marking the accession to the Regional Security System (RSS) of Guyana. The PM accepted the document during his visit to Bridgetown, Barbados.
PM Mitchell visited the neighbour nation to attend and participate in the Cuba-CARICOM Summit to remember the 50th Anniversary of Cuba-CARICOM diplomatic relations.
It is worth noting that RSS is an international agreement focused on the security and defence of the Eastern Caribbean. The agreement serves to safeguard the stability and peace of the region through collaborative engagements with partner countries as well as the security sector.
Guyana was added to the regional grouping by Prime Minister Mitchell. He stated that the accession of Guyana is in line with the RSS’ plans of expansion into South America and will provide increased opportunities for collaboration and data sharing within the region.
The group has been joined by some other Caribbean countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
RRS, the 40-year-old organisation, helps the countries in the region in strengthening and improving border security, along with promoting promotional functional cooperation. It has been working to decrease the harmful impact of environmental and artificial disasters and affords access to training and capacity building in digital forensics and asset recovery, among others, through the RSS Training Institute.
