Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of the Federation and Konris Maynard, Minister of Energy, participated in the Atlantic Council Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 (PACC 2030) Climate Resilience Clean Energy Summit in Nassau, The Bahamas on June 9, 2023.
The meet was held on the sidelines of the US-Caribbean Leaders Meeting, which was co-hosted by the Vice President of the United States of America – Kamala Harris.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew shared the closing remarks at PACC 2030. During his remarks, he shared his insights on the Sustainable Island State Agenda of St Kitts and Nevis.
According to the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister Drew was quoted saying, “We recently told the United Nations that we promise to reduce the gases that are causing climate change. We also made plans to develop our country in a way that protects the environment.”
“This is what our government said a few months ago when we talked about making St Kitts and Nevis into a sustainable island. We have a plan that will last for seven years, and we want to make our country strong and fair. Energy will be a big part of this plan,” he continued.
He furthermore utilised the platform to inform the world about the revolutionary vision of the Government of St Kitts and Nevis. According to PM Drew, the major focus of the government revolves around the development of renewable energy to ensure energy security.
“Even though we’re a small country, we have a great chance to invest in developing our energy sector. With our available resources, especially geothermal energy, we can make a lot of money. We might only need about 100 megawatts for ourselves, but we have 900 megawatts left over,” PM Drew.
“What should we do with all that extra energy? We can turn it into hydrogen or ammonia or even send it to nearby islands like Puerto Rico. We could power almost our entire country with what’s left. It’s a big opportunity for us!” he added as he shared his vision.
In addition to this, Dr Terrance Drew emphasised the commitment of the government to ensuring the reliable and sustainable investment opportunities are taken advantage of.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis has outlined that the Vice President of the US, Kamala Harris, and Caribbean Leaders launched US-Caribbean PACC 2030 at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles in June 2022.
