Guyana: Prez Irfaan Ali hosts dinner for Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan

President of the Republic of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, hosted a dinner meeting for the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan and her team at State House on the evening of April 23, 2023.

Georgetown, Guyana: President of the Republic of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, hosted a dinner meeting for the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan and her team at State House on the evening of April 23, 2023.

According to the update shared by the Office of the President of Guyana, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips; Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo; Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Hugh Todd; Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oniedge Walrond; Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues; and Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud were also at the dinner meeting.

It is worth mentioning that Guyana became the first English-speaking Caribbean country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1972.

Earlier as well, President Dr Irfaan Ali hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting Indian Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his team at State House. During brief remarks, the President called Guyana’s relationship with India “strong and respectful” and one in which both countries share similar values.

As per the update, he said the time is right to enhance cooperation at the government-to-government level and with the private sectors of both countries.

A number of government officials, cabinet ministers, members of the diplomatic community and private sector representatives were also at the dinner.

During the visit to the Caribbean island country of Guyana, the External Foreign Minister of India, Dr S Jaishankar, engaged in many high-level meetings with the Guyanese President and his team. The meeting was hosted at the Office of the President on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.

As per the official update, during the engagement, the President told the Minister that Guyana looks forward to a long, sustained and strong relationship with India. The visiting team also included the High Commissioner of India to Guyana, Dr KJ Srinivasa and several high-ranked Indian Government officials.
