St George’s, Grenada: The National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) organised a sod-turning ceremony on September 19, 2023 (Tuesday). This ceremony shows the commitment of the government towards the general public to build a more climate-resilient nation.
The Ministry noted that the sod-turning ceremony held by the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, marks the commitment of the government of Grenada to make the water sector in Grenada more resilient to climate change and to strengthen the efficiency of its management.
According to the recent update, Grenada’s water supply is primarily reliant on surface water and rainwater harvesting. With rising average temperatures, more unpredictable rainfall, more frequent heavy rainfall events, and saltwater intrusion in groundwater linked to sea-level rise, climate change is exacerbating water scarcity issues.
G-CREWS will support the water sector by reducing water demand and increasing water availability.
With the pipes on the island and work soon to commence, the Communities of Mirabeau to Tivoli in St Andrew, Tufton Hall in St Mark and Morne Rouge in St George stand to benefit from the G-CREWS Group 1 Pipe Installation, the update by the Ministry outlined.
The project is jointly financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) under its International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the Government of Grenada.
This event gathered praise and laud from the general public of Grenada.
What is a sod-turning ceremony:
A sod-turning ceremony is also considered a groundbreaking ceremony. This ceremony is conducted when a new building project is commenced at a site. It is regarded to be an important occasion for getting publicity and acknowledging the place in the community. This ceremony can be designed to set a successful trajectory and engender feelings of goodwill toward the business or organisation.
