Roseau, Dominica: The Government of Dominica has been making plans to renovate and expand the runway of the Douglas Charles Airport. The announcement was made by the Minister of Tourism, Denise Charles, during the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Barbados.
The Minister anticipated that the renovation would be considered a move which would increase the number of carriers to the island nation of Dominica.
She addressed the Travel Market Report (TMR) and outlined, “The Government of Dominica has been planning to embark on the project to expand the runway at the Douglas Charles Airport.” She added that post-completion, this will attract major airline partners, such as JetBlue and Delta.
She continued that the destination will welcome America Airlines flights from Miami, and she also outlined that such constructions and renovations will encourage other carriers to expand flights.
Minister of Tourism, Denise Charles, was quoted saying that the government of Dominica, along with several ministries, is engaged in advanced discussions with major airlines. It is also anticipated that Dominica will be welcoming more flights in the near future.”
The event was also attended by the CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority, Colin Piper, who also interacted with the audience and emphasised the importance of this new project for a small island country like Dominica. He outlined that this renovation was critical because sometimes wind has caused issues for flights trying to land at Douglas Charles Airport.
Piper outlined, “For years, landing in Dominica has been difficult for a lot of aircraft because the wind poses challenges for landing on our current runway.”
He added, “The runway improvements and the new airport are both efforts to enable people to land here, enjoy their time here, and not have to be diverted to one of our neighbouring islands.”
