Ambassador Kevin Isaac outlines regional issues related to Caribbean countries in CHOGM 2022

Kigali, Rwanda: In the recently held Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2022 (CHOGM 2022) in Kigali, Rwanda, St Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the United Kingdom represented the Caribbean country during various forums.

Ambassador Kevin Isaac, with his delegation, including Gurdip Dev Bath – Special Representative of St Kitts and Nevis, outlined several regional issues such as climate change and development agendas of the Caribbean countries during their visit to Rwanda.

Kevin Isaac, who is also the Chairman of the Commonwealth Board of Governors, participated in various events in the CHOGM 2022. Isaac and Dev Bath held an interactive engagement with the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland. In the discussion, they voiced issues related to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and their vulnerability to climate change.

While emphasizing the significance of the CHOGM, Isaac noted that there’s nothing more significant than 54 countries and their people coming together to celebrate and underscore a common commitment to working in partnership to deliver a shared future.

Moreover, Gurdip Bath also remained quite active during the CHOGM and shared the constant updates about the representation of St Kitts and Nevis in the meeting through his social media handles. He said, “I am honoured and proud to be amongst the Heads of Government from the Commonwealth. It is indeed a privilege to represent St Kitts and Nevis at CHOGM, Kigali Convention Centre.”

Representation of St Kitts and Nevis, Dev Bath also met with the Prime Minister of St Lucia, Philip J Pierre and discussed mutual issues and assured continued support between St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia.

The 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting was started on June 20, 2022, and concluded on June 25, 2022, in Kigali, Rwanda, where Patricia Scotland managed to retain her position as the Commonwealth Secretary-General for the second term. It has also witnessed a two-year hiatus of the COVID-19 pandemic as the meeting was scheduled to be held in 2020.

The election to select the new CSG was one of the prime aim of this year’s CHOGM, where 54 representatives from member states of the Commonwealth voted to elect Secretary General during its opening ceremony on Friday, June 24, 2022.

The theme for the 2022 CHOGM was “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming”.

Further, Prince of Wales – Charles also attended the Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting 2022, where he emphasized the friendship, humanity and values of the Commonwealth.

Various heads of the government of Caribbean countries such as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda – Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Dominica – Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of St Lucia – Philip J Pierre, Prime Minister of the Bahamas – Philip Davis, and Prime Minister of Jamaica – Andrew Holness also participated in the meeting.
