St Vincent and the Grenadines: The opposition comes out in support of the teachers, protesting against the mandate vaccination policy of the government. The opposition leader of the New Democratic Party – Dr Godwin, Friday, urged the government to relax the order calling it a ‘draconian policy”.
He stated, “I hope that common sense will prevail in this matter. The government can still pull back from this draconian policy and let us work together as a people together to defeat COVID, to learn to live with it and to overcome it”.
While referring to the letter written by teachers regarding the issue, the opposition leader praised the 29 teachers of the West St. George Secondary School, who stood against the mandate vaccination policy and signed on the document.
“How often do you see that kind of courage? It should seem like an everyday thing that you would do. If you feel this way, you should sign your name to it. But how often do you see people actually stand up and say, ‘Here I am. I am standing up’, or put your name, your signature that you can’t remove to a document that says, ‘I am opposed to this. I stand with my fellow teachers in opposition to the government’s vaccine mandate’?”, the leader added.
The opposition leader highlighted that they are in favour of the COVID-19 vaccination drive going on in the island country but are standing against governments’ decision of making vaccines a mandate, noting that the workers are not the issue, but COVID-19 is, for which the country needs to stand united.
“That is wrong. You cannot treat people like that. You have to be nuts. Thank you for standing up for them. Thanks to The NDP for standing up for them, and we will continue to do so,” he further asserted.
