Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of the Federation, Dr Terrance Drew, shared a glimpse of his interaction with other CARICOM leaders at the Regional Heads for the Regional Security Systems (RSS) Council of Ministers meeting in Grenada on March 22, 2023 (Wednesday). The update about the meeting was shared through the official social media account.
According to the update shared by the government of St Kitts and Nevis, PM Dr Terrance Drew was accompanied by Commissioner of Police James Sutton, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Cecile Hull and Commander of St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF), Lieutenant Colonel J Anthony Comrie.
The meeting holds a significant place and platform for the regional leaders, during which national and regional ideas were discussed. The major issue to be discussed was enhancing regional security.
The regional heads discussed the significance of addressing the current challenges, such as drug trafficking, illegal arms trade, and intelligence gathering while reasserting their commitment to strengthening collaborations.
As per the update, during the meeting, gang violence and crime was another topic which was discussed between the leaders as the cases of the same have been increasing with the passage of time.
During this, PM Terrance Drew, who also serves as the Minister of National Security of St Kitts and Nevis, responded and stated that there is a need for applying unconventional approaches in the Caribbean Region.
He shared the mechanisms that have worked within St Kitts and Nevis with his colleagues and asked them to seek balance in the approaches. He stated that they “cannot just approach with an iron fist”.
Following this, the significance of strengthening relations was reiterated by each speaker. The ministers anticipated that the strong ties with fellow member states would assist in the promotion of regional stability and security.
