PM Skerrit declared that officials struggled over the weekend to get the Moroccon Hotel and 10 other properties in Portsmouth ready to help the people displaced by the La Soufriere volcano’s eruption in St Vincent and Grenadines.
These evacuees would be assisted for up to five months, declared by PM Skerrit. National Emergency Planning Organisation (NEPO) already held a meeting to find details for evacuation and shelter management practice in arrangement for evacuees’ arrival, revealed by PM Skerrit.
The Public Utility Committee in Dominica has arranged amenities like water and gas availability. Public Utility Committee would manage the installation of these utilities.
“Attempts are also undertaken for internet connections at 11 identified facilities, ” PM Skerrit added.
“FLOW has agreed to provide finance with the internet services at the respective Morrocan Hotel, at the same time NRC has decided to finance internet installation at ten other facilities too.”
The Emergency Shelter Sub Committee activated its structural management and groups in the place and on standby to help with following all the COVID-19 rules and regulations. Moreover, the National Psychosocial Support team is also helping in these managements.
It will begin work with the evacuees after the quarantine period is over, and the Ministry of Health and Wellness gives clearance.
I have been in touch with my colleague Prime Minister of SVG, Dr Ralph Gonsalves all night. It is estimated that they have to evacuate around 20,000 people due to the La Soufrière volcano. https://t.co/pIeeZ162yB
