CARICOM deals with African Medical Council over vaccine

Trinidad and Tobago: Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley announced that through a diplomatic arrangement, CARICOM made a deal with the African Medical Council, in which the community has accepted an offer of 226,000 COVID-19 vaccines.

According to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, Trinidad and Tobago’s Government is working assiduously to procure additional COVID-19 vaccines for Trinidad and Tobago’s population.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley announced the additional sources would complement the beginning 100,000 to 120,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine allocation from the COVAX facility supposed to arrive at the end of February 2021.

Through a diplomatic arrangement at CARICOM with the African Medical Council, has accepted an offer of 226,000 COVID-19 vaccines from the council.

He specifically noted that “African Medical Council are offering the nation 226,000, that’s another 100,000 people, and hopefully, as T&T get that and T&T to go forward in the weeks and months, T&T expect that an improved availability in the marketplace will come.”

The Prime Minister also stated a third source is being sought by talking instantly to the vaccines’ suppliers.

Dr. Rowley stated, “over and above any arrangement in the COVAX or with the African Medical Council group, and govt of T&T can talk to AstraZeneca and buy what is available from them at prices that T&T will negotiate.

In the months ahead, the council of T&T is expecting to get vaccines from three sources. If other supplies come on the market and are approved by the WHO, the govt of T&T will look there, and all of this will be taking the citizens up to vaccinating the population to approximately 80 percent.”

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, during a media conference held at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, Keith Rowley made these announcements the previous day (Wednesday 03rd February 2021).

A Facebook user commented, “You are doing the best for the country. Not everyone will appreciate the effort, but they are in the minority, and perhaps they have other ways of sorting themselves out.”
