Burton-Nibbs International Airport of Barbuda marked its official opening ceremony on Thursday, 3rd October, 2024. With its commencement, the airport aims to become a thriving hub, enhancing connectivity and providing services to airlines and passengers from around the world.
The Governor General, Rodney Williams lead the ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of the new Barbuda International Airport. The ceremony was attended by several officials who called it a historic day for the people of Barbuda.
Captain Charles Edwards cemented his place in the aviation history of Barbuda, as he became the first to land a commercial flight at the airport. The SVG Islander touched down at morning bringing six passengers, welcomed by a water salute.
Following that LIAT 2020 also make its visit to the airport, which shows the airport’s busy schedule with renowned air carriers enlisted for the flight routines of this new airbase.
Moreover, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne and the main driver of the project for a new international airport also made his trip over to the sister island for the opening of the brand-new gateway to paradise.
While shedding light on the commencement of the airport, PM Gaston Browne called it a crucial step towards contributing significantly to the overall economic conditions of the nation by welcoming large number of tourists to the country.
The Prime Minister shared his vision of positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a premier destination for all travellers and promising a brighter future for its citizens and visitors alike.
The newly developed airport faced several consequences as the opposition created several obstacles during the construction phase. PM Browne asserted that this opening ceremony signifies their commitment to overcome all those challenges in order to connect Barbuda to the global world.
PM Gaston Browne shared his vison of transforming Barbuda into a thriving hub and prosperous community. He referred, the culmination of the airport, a “collaborative effort” undertaken by every individual with the primary motive of elevating the nation to greater heights.
The Prime Minister stated that this airport is all set to act as a hub of economic activity, generating employment, stimulating local businesses, and attracting investment.
The Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment, Charles Fernandez expressed delight on the commencement of the airport. He stated that this new Barbuda International Airport is a shining testament to the visionary leadership of the Government of the country.
He added that “despite the small size of Barbuda, they have taken several significant measures with a vision to modernize the island, ensuring that its air links are second to none in this region so that Barbuda can also take advantage of the remarkable growth in the tourism of the country that they have recorded this year.”
