VC Bird International Airport undergoes major rehabilitation for smooth landings

The Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority has proposed the idea of rehabilitating the runway and other airfield surfaces of VC Bird International Airport with a vision to ensure the efficiency of air travel and smooth landing of the aircraft.
This rehabilitation of the airfield surface at VC Bird International Airport is a part of the continued commitment of the authorities towards ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of the airfield. Therefore, they have urged the contractors and firms to submit their tenders for the construction and rehabilitation of runways and airfield surfaces.
As per the details, the Avia NG Airport Consultants have partnered with Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority for this rehabilitation project. It is a consulting firm specializing in the planning, designing and constructing airport with their primary motive of connecting communities to the world from the ground up.
“Avia NG Airport Consultants are very proud to be a partner with ABAA and to be administering this tender after preparing the designs for the project. We look forward to a successful procurement,” noted Avia NG Airport Consultants.
While shedding light on the rehabilitation, the authorities noted that these runways are being built in accordance with the international aviation regulations, catering to the needs and demands of aviation standards.
They further added that rehabilitation of runways will not only enhance the safety of the passengers and the aircraft but also the overall operational efficiency of the airport.
The rehabilitation process would include several works, including the concrete panel replacement of the main apron, pavement rehabilitation of Runway 07-25, the construction phasing of the Runway 07 Alternate Turn pad, the expansion of Runway 25 Turn pad for Code 9 and the concrete panel repairs of the Taxiway E and Apron.
The quantities to be included for the rehabilitation of VC Bird International Airport are:
- Asphalt Milling: 160,000 m^2
- Excavation: 19,000 m^3
- Granular Base Lime Rock (P-211): 8000 m^3
- Cement Stabilized Base (P-304): 4400 m^3
- Asphalt Paving (P-401): 64,000 tonnes
- Concrete Paving (P-501): 8000 m^2
- PCC Panel Replacement: 120 panels
- Other works including Airfield Electrical, Line Markings etc.
All these upgrades and rehabilitations in the VC Bird International Airport are anticipated to play a huge role in ensuring a seamless travel experience for all passengers, making their visit smooth and comfortable.
Recently, Barbuda has also marked the opening ceremony of an International Airport. It is being considered a great step undertaken by the government towards transforming the island nation into one of the most prosperous and flourishing sustainable island communities in the Caribbean region.
